Department of State announces an open competition for organizations to submit applications to carry out the “America’s Role in the Fight Against Apartheid” project.

Project activities must take place in South Africa and the United States, and be directed at South African audiences/participants.

ProgramObjectives:
· To develop a publically accessible museum-style exhibition that would represent the historical anti-Apartheid movement in the United States.

· To raise public awareness both in the United States and in South Africa of the similarities and synergies between the American civil rights movement, the anti-Apartheid movement in the United States, and South Africa’s liberation struggle.

· To balance South Africans’ perceptions of the role U.

S.

civil society played in trying to end Apartheid in South Africa and support the struggle for liberation.

Competition is limited to 61 project areas, including 50 state public health agencies or their bona fide agents; the cities of Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco, CA; San Diego, CA; Houston, TX; Chicago, IL; New York, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Baltimore, MD; Washington, D.C.; and the territorial governments of Puerto Rico and U. S. Virgin Islands.

Eligible applicants with laboratories can apply for laboratory funding.
